What is History Quest: United States?

History Quest: United States is a secular homeschool curriculum covering the history and civics of the United States from the 1500s to the early 21st century.

Because it is secular, the text presents religious beliefs from this period not as factual accounts, but as relevant sources and perspectives to be considered through a historical lens.

In History Quest: United States we have not shied away from this country’s indefensible treatment of Black people, Native Americans, members of the LGBTQ community, people with disabilities, women, and others. By centering some of their stories in our curriculum, we lift up these voices and have created a more complete, accurate, and inclusive history than is typically available for grade school students.

Designed as a read-aloud for upper elementary-age children, an independent read for older students, or a journey of thrilling stories to be shared during family story time, this main text of the History Quest: United States curriculum presents an immersive study of U.S. history and civics in an engaging and memorable format.

Used alongside the History Quest: United States Study Guide and other recommended resources, your students will learn about the ideas, conflicts, inventions, and individuals that shaped the United States (and the world) and take their first step in a life-long quest to explore and appreciate history.

What Material Does History Quest: United States Cover?

Students will learn about events that occurred from the 1500s to the early 21st century. Major areas of study include:

Who Can Use History Quest: United States?

History Quest: United States is appropriate for upper elementary-aged children* learning at home or in co-ops, learning pods, micro-schools, or charter schools. Third through sixth graders can use the chapter book as their primary history spine, either as a read aloud or by reading independently.

*Unlike Early Times and Middle Times, which are appropriate for students as young as first grade, we recommend starting History Quest: United States during or after third grade, as this book does not shy away from some of the shameful and complicated moments in U.S. history.

What are History Hops?

At the end of each chapter, you will find a History Hop! section that takes the reader on an imaginary journey back in time to visit historical characters and places introduced during that chapter.

Below are a few of the adventures you’ll find in United States History Hops:

Visit a busy field hospital after the Battle of Gettysburg

Go undercover and outsmart wily outlaws with Bass Reeves

Help a first-time voter grapple with a tough decision

Cheer on John Henry as he races to outperform a steam drill
